Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi, codenamed Curveball by German and American intelligence officials who dealt with his claims, has told the Guardian that he fabricated tales of mobile bioweapons trucks and clandestine factories in an attempt to bring down the Saddam Hussein regime, from which he had fled in 1995.

Oh, Those Opulent O’s.

We’ve come to the end of a decade - yes, I start counting my decades by the ones and not the zeroes, which means that 1980 was the last year of the 70’s. I know it looks stupid on paper, but it is the proper way. My reference point would be the classic Onion Headline - “The Millennium Begins in 2001, Terrorists Note.”

In the grand tradition of rehashing old news and making sub-standard lists of events, arbitrary lists of the ‘best’ movies or music, reality television ‘stars’, or worst of all - consumer products - allow me the exercise of looking back with the rose colored glasses of time. I’d like to try to present the previous ten years as it might show up in a history book.

The Opulent O's

Previous eras of the American experience have been labeled, whether accurately or not, by the generations that followed. The eras of the Gilded Age, the Roaring Twenties, or the Fabulous Fifties give an over reaching illusion of wealth and comfort afforded by all the citizenry. Careful study shows that there were major exceptions ranked by class status and race in each of these three examples, and the names themselves discount recessionary times, and any turmoil that existed. However, the tradition of remembrance for a grouping of ten years with a fantastical moniker has become an unfortunate reality of historical narrative when examining the history of America. The era that we are focusing on now is no exception -- the era which begins at the turn of the 21st Century to the new year of 2011 CE. This time has become known as the Opulent O’s.

To first explain the name of the era, the people of the time did not refer to the year in which they lived as the aughts, or oughts as proper English would dictate, or even the example of the generation that lived through the turn of the previous century, the 1900’s. The pronunciation of the year in which they lived predominantly was spoken as, “two thousand and...” followed by the number designate. Hence, why a few historians have refereed to the era as the ‘And’s’. The consensus by reputable sources and careful research has been to designate this time as the ‘Oh’s.’ The evidence in the historical record suggests that the people of the time would sometimes drop the ‘two thousand’ in speech and would simply state, “Oh six,” when giving a descriptor of a year; as an example.

The word Opulent has become to describe the era. The Latin derived definition in English are defined as 1. Having or indicating wealth, and also 2. Abundant or plentiful. Ignoring race or regional exceptions -- the word perfectly defines the era.

The primary fuel of the time was cheap and easily obtained petroleum drilled from the ground. The peak of use of gasoline and plastic derived from oil occurred in this era. The abundance of cheap oil and fuel allowed for cheap food sources. The importance of oil in the life cycle of plant to waste product must be studied to understand the mindset of the time. The availability and sheer amounts of cheap fuel created a cradle-to-grave manufacturing cycle from consumer goods to 4 ton single passenger vehicle with low fuel to kilometer use ratios -- which defines the zeitgeist. The most important aspect, in hindsight, to the lifestyle of the times was the amount of fuel used to create inexpensive food. The petroleum was used in the creation of fertilizer, and copious amounts were used in the entire process of seed to market, and market to aftermarket production.

Simplified, the oil or oil products would be used by the farmer from every aspect of his production -- from the multiple passes on a tractor (soil toiling, planting, chemical pesticide application, cultivation and a final till of the soil), to transport to industrial food processing off site (sometimes thousands of miles) from the farmland. Next, from the secondary processor which would create a chemical byproduct of the original agricultural product (Maize and soybeans being the most popular of the bases found in most supermarkets [see also ADM Corporation] would then transport and package the new product and ship by truck to market. Retail supermarkets [Safeway, Albertsons], “fast food” restaurants [McDonald’s, Chili’s] or superstore retail outlets [Costco, Wal-Mart] would then cater to the final end user, who more often than not, used a single passenger vehicle to transport the product home. Once the product was consumed, the end user simply disposed of the plastic packaging to preserve the food product, and the outer container -- typically another plastic or cardboard package which only served to encourage purchase. Once discarded the packaging materials were then transported by another gas powered truck or transport to take the used goods to be covered in a landfill. The concept of cradle to cradle manufacturing may have germinated in this era, but due to the nature and scale of the single-use economic cycle, it was counter productive or even suicidal for any industry to adopt a plan to reuse or recycle their resources or waste products.

Since fuel and food were inexpensive, the lifestyle of the typical American of the Opulent O’s were filled with store bought conveniences and electronic trinkets designed for obsolescence which encouraged constant replacement. Leveraged credit based upon elevated housing prices allowed consumers buying power. It was not uncommon for an American to have bought a home past their means, and taken credit based on that home’s perceived market value, called a home equity loan. These funds were then used to purchase more consumer goods -- and often with a credit card [MasterCard, Visa]. The economy was primarily based on the spending habits of the consumer. Even after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush urged Americans to go to the malls, and purchase houses and cars to get the economy engine moving again. The government created an environment of low interest rates and extremely easy credit in order to facilitate the consumer’s appetite.

Two major military engagements were initiated in response to the sensational terrorist attacks in America, under the banner of a “War on Terrorism.” The engagements in Afghanistan were aided by the Allied Western NATO nations, and the second invasion of Iraq resulted in the replacement of the government there, and a permanent American presence. History has shown, both of these costly involvements were to secure the oil fields, and an attempt to stabilize the region [see also Iran v America 1970-2020] -- thus insuring the flow of inexpensive oil to American business interests. Specifically those partners in Europe and China. Like the citizenry, these foreign entanglements were funded largely by credit. The U.S. had gone from a creditor nation to a debtor nation in 1988, but accelerated during the Bush and Obama Administrations.

Despite the trillions of dollars expended, the price of oil rose as industrial engines of India and China grew their GDP by 20% per year. Oil Prices rose in late 2006 because of simple supply and demand, plus speculation in the commodity markets. Soon, inflation of consumer products, fuel prices, and food began to outpace the threshold of business and consumer expendable incomes. Quickly, the slowdown of consumer spending toppled the preposterous derivative financial products of the time, wiped out the housing speculation and subsequent consumer credit bubble, and exposed widespread institutional Ponzi schemes, not dissimilar to the domino effect experienced at the end of the Roaring 1920’s.

Amazingly, the Six Corporate media companies either were misinformed or incapable of reporting the trends that were creating the problems that led to disaster, and instead reported only soft news (entertainment and sporting events which fed to their other advertising sponsored media concerns), or blatantly perpetuated partisan arguments to fill a 24 hour news cycle with surprisingly low or useless content to their audiences. The news of the day, even as late as 2010, was that of recovery and consumer confidence -- despite under reported or manipulated unemployment figures and a withering manufacturing base. Despite the ineffectual news climate, the government and other influential sources were inserting the word “unsustainable” into the collective vocabulary. At the end of the decade, even to the most optimistic, it seemed that the party was coming to a close. The start of a ‘new normal’ was discussed and contemplated.

Obama 'Open to' Miranda Changes

David Axelrod, ex-Tribune reporter, ex-political hack-until he met Obama, now top White House political adviser, said his boss was amenable to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.’s call for a new law allowing interrogators to question terrorism suspects for lengthy periods without informing them of their rights.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Axelrod said Mr. Obama was “open to looking at” changing the Miranda rule, which generally bans prosecutors from using as evidence statements made by suspects in custody before they have been warned that they have a right to remain silent and to consult a lawyer. “There may be some things that have to be done,” Mr. Axelrod said. “Certainly we’re willing to talk to Congress about that. But they would be in the area of adjustments, not a wholesale revision.”

Wait, wasn't Mr. Obama's law degree in Constitutional Law? Wasn't he a Constitutional Law professor?

Axlerod’s comments followed Holder's call for Congress to enact legislation that would carve out a new exception to the Miranda rule. It comes from a landmark 1966 Supreme Court decision that is intended to ensure that confessions are not coerced, consistent with the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

This might be an attempt to defuse a political discussion by Republicans who are upset that terrorist suspects, even including United States citizens arrested on United States soil, like Faisal Shahzad, the would-be-Times Square bomber — as criminal defendants rather than as military detainees under wartime rules. The thought is that Mirandising the defendants interrupts the interrogation process...

But, but, what about change and hope and all that? We'll just do a word search for "Obama" and hit replace for "Bush" and "Eric Holder" for "Alberto Gonzalez". Now I've got it.

Former Bradley Student from Peoria IL Al Qaeda Agent pleads GUILTY in Aiding Sept. 11 Attackers

A former Bradley University student pleaded guilty in Peoria federal court today to conspiring with, and providing support for, Al Qaeda operatives in the months before and after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Ali al-Marri, 43, (seen in this picture in his super secret spy outfit that allowed him to just blend right in Midwestern town of Peoria IL - I mean look at that Mullet!) spoke softly and occasionally smiled as U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm read aloud a timeline of criminal activity that included meetings with two key architects of the terrorist attacks, participating in terrorist training camps in Pakistan and researching cyanide compounds and other chemical agents purportedly for an attack on U.S soil.

"Ali al-Marri today admitted that he came here, to Peoria, Illinois, as an Al Qaeda operative the day before the Sept. 11 attacks to plan and prepare for future acts of terrorism within the United States," said Jeffrey Lang, acting U.S. Attorney for the central district of Illinois.

Appearing in khaki pants, a plain white shirt and white kufi hat, the bearded al-Marri admitted to having associations with both Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, and Mustafa al-Hawsawi, chief financier of the attacks, prior to arriving in the U.S. on Sept. 10, 2001 after obtaining a student visa from Bradley University.

While training at several terrorist camps in Pakistan, al-Marri admitted he became an expert with military weapons, learned to conceal his identity online and used his computer to research chemical agents that could be used in an attack.

U.S. attorneys culled from al-Marri's laptop computer research on various cyanide compounds, their toxicity levels and where they could be bought.

Al-Marri also admitted to exploring uses from sulfuric acid. And while it's not certain whether al-Marri planned to use these chemicals, U.S. agents also recovered from his house an almanac with pages book-marked showing U.S. bridges, roads and waterways.

A native of Qatar and a father of five, al-Marri was living in Peoria on a student visa when he was arrested.

He was initially charged in federal court and then suddenly shifted over to military custody and then held for years without charges.

Al-Marri is being held at the Federal Correctional Institution in Pekin, Ill. His attorneys are seeking to have him serve his imprisonment in his native Qatar.

- No doubt this story isn't even started. Again, the Obama Administration walks the tightrope of getting Al-Marri out of military custody - but will try him in the civilian courts. Obviously the political and National Security issues conflict here.

Why Al-Marri isn't being hung NOW - and I mean RIGHT NOW for admission of treason and for crimes against humanity are unclear.

McCain is finally starting to campaign (see that link? It's underlined and goes to where I first found this information), and he's casting Obama as untested, unprepared to lead the country and too aloof to connect with voters. His audience? Pissed off working-class and old white Democrat women who voted HillDog.

He doesn't even have to say anything - how come? He just has to show stock footage of the Democrats themselves.

Welllll... just because there's a deal for troop with drawl doesn't mean it's 100% the "War Is Over" BUT it effectively ends the Obama talking point and campaign promise to pull the troops out of Iraq.

See, the draft agreement with Iraq would link troop reductions to achievement of certain security milestones, although the details have not been made public. So there you go - and the Iraqi's can simply "ask" for us to stick around. But it gets the troops out by 2011.

Now I have to ask, what's different from John McCain and Obama? (I mean other than height?)

Abortion? You ask? I didn't bring it up... but Nancy Peloisi just did - on Meet the Press. She said that she has studied the Roman Catholic's stance on abortion. Oh? Really?
She said that the Church was against abortion after the Pill.

Uh, Nancy? The Church writings specifically naming abortion as murder appear as early as 70 AD in the Didache, the first written catechism of the Christian church (Didache 2:1–2 [A.D. 70]). How'd you study that, exactly? Wikipedia, and just scrolled down to the bottom? Citation needed.

And abortion, as an issue? That's so old, so boring, so cliched... so not a winning strategy in purple swing states.

Gillespie Says 'Appeaser' Speech Not Aimed at Obama

Presidential counselor Ed Gillespie said today that President Bush's remarks yesterday in Jerusalem about "appeasement" were not intended as a reference to Barack Obama and suggested that White House aides were surprised by the Democratic reaction.

"We did not anticipate that it would be taken that way, because it's kind of hard to take it that way if you look at the actual words of the president's remarks," Gillespie told reporters aboard Air Force One today as it traveled from Israel to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

He said White House aides did anticipate that some observers might interpret the remarks as "a rebuke" of former president Jimmy Carter, who recently met with Hamas. But Gillespie said the comments were not meant to single out Carter, either.

Bush's remarks were "consistent with what he has said in the past relative to dealing with groups like Hezbollah and Hamas and al-Qaeda, relative to standing by Israel, relative to concerns about Iran developing the prospect of a nuclear weapon," Gillespie said.

He dismissed criticism from Democrats such as Senate Majority Harry Reid (Nev.), who called the remarks "reckless and irresponsible," or House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), who said Bush had acted "beneath the dignity of the office of president."

"We're happily not in a campaign and out of the political arena," Gillespie said. "...I don't know what sentence they could point to that they would say is reckless or outrageous. The fact is that if you look at the words, they're pretty consistent with what the president has said in the past, and frankly consistent with what many of them have said."

I wonder where they got that silly idea from anyway?

CIA Secret Santa Photo Released!

Following the disastrous CIA scandal of the VHS taped confessions following some 'torture' were accidentally destroyed, another scandal has begun. Administration lawyers have asked the judge to delay the hearing into the destruction of the CIA interrogation videotapes, until the DOJ and CIA internal investigations are completed -- which should be right around Jan 21st... 2009.

To add to the CIA's woes today, and the continued failure to keep the highest most sensitive secrets from our enemies and the press - the following photo has surfaced.

On first glance, this photo confirms the conspiracy we've suspected all along. I'm not going to speculate if the image has been 'doctored' or 'PhotoShopped' in anyway. That's another article all together.

What I will question is how this photo was leaked? Why now? Is it to distract the press from the Hillary free fall in Iowa, N.H. and S.Carolina? Is it to show how porous the CIA has become? Or is there a darker message? Perhaps to show us that our borders cannot be closed from Northern intruders?

Giving the Troops the Bird

Thanksgiving is almost here which means it will be time to inundate the airwaves with shots of our soldiers and the politicians that sent them into harm's way. Rumor amongst the civilians is that there is a pecking order of which politicians the troops would and would not want visiting. I am going to take my best guess as to who these folks may be.

George W. Bush: Kinda a no brainer but there are a few reasons to have him top the list. On his last visit to Iraq the president presented a beautiful turkey straight out of Martha's Stewart's Food for Photo Ops (image right). This was awesome except for one thing. IT WAS A PLASTIC TURKEY.

He pardons fucking turkeys. I know it is tradition but "Scooter" should be in jail. Undercover assets are important in fights against terrorists. Losing them can't sit well. Complicit cover-up certainly won't.

He's a moron. It's funny on the Daily Show watching him mangle the English language but I bet it is a lot less funny when your life depends on that scrambled brain.

Hillary Clinton: Three words: Yadda Yadda Yadda. I got ten bucks says she never sits quietly and just watches football. I got ten bucks saying she talks 50% of the time at the table. I Got ten bucks saying that if she shows me how to properly hold my fork again I will stab it in her eye.

Richard Cheney: "As a little twist, today we are going to shoot you in the face unless you stop starting wars. " The worst of them all. Knowing he is responsible for this. Knowing that he knew there were no WMD's, no AQ (then, anyway), and proceeded to hold up photos claiming that whatever we were looking for must be here because look, the face of the Virgin Mary. I don't think she was a lesbian.

I just saw this. To recruit soldiers, the military offers bonuses to join. The rumor was that they were asking for money from injured soldiers back since they did not fulfill their obligation. Today, the military clarified and it seems only the UNPAID portion of the bonus will be kept. See, fairness.

Right now he is "NOT IN BOP CUSTODY." I hope they find him soon so that I can follow this criminal's whereabouts.

I am also hoping for a Scooter-cam that will broadcast from his cell 24 hours a day. Maybe a Courtyard-cam for his hour outside every day. This administration is way into spying and I think we should all try it out with Scooter. It will be fun and then we won't mind our lack of rights as much.
