Anti-Consumption Hypocrisy Explosion

Maybe you've actually read Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax? Well there's one of those slapped together 90 minute versions coming to the big screen now... 


Oh, you haven't read it? Or maybe it was in the 70's? Well The Lorax is the Silent Spring for the grade school set. The original Woodsy Owl spokesperson for conservation. It's simply an anti-consumer/anti-capitalist warning against rampant greed and consumerism which destroyed the forest of Truffula Trees and the Brown Bar-ba-loots, Swomee-Swans, and Humming-Fish that depended on them. The whole damn ecosystem is gone to make a Pillow Pet, or a sweater or some-such-thing. 


Here's the ironic bit about it... the whole thing is being co-opted by corporate greed. I mean, above and beyond the bastardization of the story now that Seuss's corpse is fairly cold now.


As The Lorax arrives in theaters— there's dozens of corporate tie-ins riding the coat tails. While the story teaches children to conserve the earth’s finite resources, these heavily advertised partnerships compel them to consume, consume, consume. Hah!

• Seventh Generation household products and diapers festooned with the Lorax.
  
• IHOP’s kids’ menu items like Rooty Tooty Bar-Ba-Looty Blueberry Cone Cakes and Truffula Chip Pancakes.
  
• In-store promotions featuring the Lorax at Whole Foods, Pottery Barn Kids, and Target.
  
• Online Lorax games and sweepstakes for YoKids Yogurt, Comcast Xfinity TV, Target, IHOP, and HP.
  
• HP’s “Every Inkling Makes a Difference” in-school curriculum produced and distributed by Scholastic.

Surprisingly though, no Humming-Fish Sticks by Swanson? A missed opportunity there.

The three BATFE agents who were responsible for the "Fast and Furious" debacle in Phoenix have been promoted. -- Not reprimanded, not demoted and certainly not fired, but given bigger jobs with more responsibility and more pay.

Each of the agents now have high profile positions in D.C. William Newell is now special assistant to the assistant director of the agency's Office of Management, David Voth has been made branch chief for the BATFE's tobacco division.

And if those two promotions seem hard to understand, the third is particularly hard to fathom. William G. McMahon, who had been the BATFE's deputy director of operations in the West, has been made the deputy assistant director of the Office of Professional Responsibility and Security Operations. That is the division within BATFE that investigates misconduct by agency personnel.

Deep divisions between allied forces currently bombing Libya worsened today as the German military announced it was pulling forces out of NATO over continued disagreement on who will lead the campaign.

A German military spokesman said it was recalling two frigates and AWACS surveillance plane crews from the Mediterranean, after fears they would be drawn into the conflict if NATO takes over control from the U.S.

WTF?

Who's in charge? Not ME!! Nato is falling apart - expect Italy to pull out next, which means fewer airbases to launch aircraft from... and frankly, 12 minutes into this thing, wasn't the Libyan air threat pretty well bombed to submission? Libya: A No-Fly Zone In A Country With Virtually No Air Force. At what point were the bad guys supposed to just throw their AK-47's into the sand and run away? Hey, Europe, you've got a memory problem just like the US has -- The lessons in Bosnia are already forgotten?

The best part is how quickly the rhetoric has flipped the Lazy-Susan. Republicans traded papers with the Democrats to shout about how illegal this action is... oh, wait? Some of the Democrats are actually consistent and are keeping their anti-Iraq scripts too? Well, good for them. I like to see consistency rather than hypocrisy.

MADD Hypocrite

48-year-old Gainesville resident Debra Oberlin was arrested for driving under the influence after registering a .234 and .239 on breath alcohol tests — significantly above Florida’s legal limit of .08.

Oh, did I mention that Ms. Oberlin is the former president of the Gainesville chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving?

On Feb. 18 at 1:10 a.m., an officer spotted Oberlin driving erratically on Northwest 19th Street, swerving and crossing lanes, an arrest report states. Oberlin was pulled over in the 3600 block of Northwest 39th Avenue.

The officer wrote that Oberlin smelled of alcohol and had watery, bloodshot and dilated eyes. The report states that Oberlin told the officer she had four beers.

Gainesville’s MADD chapter existed for several years in the 1990s before closing in 1996 because of lack of financial support. Oberlin was the chapter president for three years.

If only there was some organization I could join to bring forth laws and a stronger Nanny state to prevent this sort of thing from happening? People Against Drunk Mothers Driving? PADMD?

Hypocrite Hillary

The Blaspheme's Hypocrite of the Week is Hillary Clinton.

She went and gave a speech about setting up a fund to help internet rebellions, (as long as they're not domestic Tea Party types, of course) The U.S. will help “people in oppressive Internet environments get around filters, stay one step ahead of the censors, the hackers, and the thugs who beat them up or imprison them for what they say online,” she said yesterday.

Clinton announced the creation of a State Department office for Cyber Issues that will be headed by Christopher Painter, an official on President Barack Obama’s National Security Council and former federal prosecutor specializing in computer crime.

American government's leadership in the cause of online freedom seems a tad hampered by things like their handling of the Wikileaks situation and even the mere whisper of Congress implementing an Internet kill switch in the US.

Also, if American companies sell firewalls and tough crackdown software to dictators - and the tax dollars on the sale goes to the people being oppressed to fight that cyber oppression that we sold them - does that seem a tad bit off the charts of stupidity? Or is it merely the most convoluted way to spur industry, the way only an American can understand?

Bizarre Christian Billboard Compares Atheism To Murder?

A group calling themselves "Answers in Genesis" recently took out a billboard in Texas depicting a young boy holding a gun.

Here’s how Answers in Genesis describes themselves:

An apologetics (i.e., Christianity-defending) ministry, dedicated to enabling Christians to defend their faith and to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ effectively…we also desire to train others to develop a biblical worldview, and seek to expose the bankruptcy of evolutionary ideas, and its bedfellow, a “millions of years old” earth (and even older universe).

[..]Personally, I can’t believe they are implying that non-believers, or to whom God “doesn’t matter,” are going to take a gun and shoot someone in the face.

Striking yes; thoughtful, absolutely not.

Although supposedly their beef is with evolution, I don’t see how that point is conveyed with this picture. So, according to them, believing what Darwin had to say means a person is lawless and will go on a killing rampage?

Amazingly I have a problem with this. First, on a long list - is the name of this group of rabble rousers. "Answers in Genesis?" Really? That's your name? There are more questions than answers in this book of the bible... let's start with why chapter two directly and completely contradicts the first chapter!? They're obviously written by a different set of Rabbi's and about 100 years apart. If god created Adam and Eve together, but then in chapter 2 has to take a rib out of Adam to make Eve... hold on I'm confused. And what about Lilith? Fan fiction? And if Cain and Able are the only children of Adam and Eve, and one gets murdered --- WHA? Wait a second! It seems human life didn't mean much to the THIRD human... and he was LIVING during Genesis! He even TALKS to god!

I'm going out on a limb here - but God didn't mean much to Cain.

He even smarts off to the all mighty after committing the first homicide. Pretty ballsy.

So, idiots can put up a billboard and not be called hypocrites? Fine. Luckily, there are some other people on the internet who don't care for insane billboards. Here's one that I hope we can all raise money for and put up right next to the other one.

Politicians and their Illegal Servants

Two weeks ago, Retired General Colin Powell got in trouble for telling 'Meet The Press' that he had illegals, "over my house, doing things whenever I call for repairs, and I'm sure you've seen them at your house. We've got to find a way to bring these people out of the darkness and give them some kind of status."

Monday morning he felt that he needed to clarify his earlier statement and offered a press release that said simply, "I do not hire illegals."

Yesterday, California Republican candidate for Governor, Meg Whitman , got clobbered with the reality that her housekeeper of nine years, wait for it, is an illegal. A secret illegal - with forged documents and everything! (read More) Which probably wouldn't have been such a big deal - except that she's made illegal immigration such a high priority in her campaign.

As recently as Tuesday in her debate against Jerry Brown, Whitman has called for tougher sanctions against employers who hire illegal workers.

"We do have to hold employers accountable."
