'Half' of Al Qaeda

Rahm Emanuel: Half Of Al Qaeda 'Eliminated' -- ABC News

One of the missed parts that was casually dropped by White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said on 'This Week' was "About “a half of al Qaeda has been eliminated in this last 18 months”

Discussing the war in Afghanistan – which recently became America’s longest – with host Jake Tapper, Emanuel was bullish on the progress that has been made in war-torn country and insisted that President Obama’s July 2011 deadline for the beginning of a drawdown of troops was “not moving.”

Yes, but for every Al Qaeda #2 and random soldier killed .... there are scores who are willing to take their place. The White House's confidence that the enemy is losing is a bit premature .... in fact .... Al Qaeda has just publicized their peace terms with the U.S. as well as threatening new attacks.

Hmmmm .... they don't sound vanquished to me, Rahm.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

The Godzilla Power Hour

First off, it's Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult

Godzilla was a 30-minute animated series co-produced between Hanna-Barbera Productions and Toho in 1978 and aired on NBC in the US and TV Tokyo in Japan.

In Japan the series was called "Godzilla: Voyage Chronicles" (ゴジラ:航海クロニクル). The series is an animated adaptation of the Japanese Godzilla films produced by Toho. The series continued to air until 1981. In this episode, Godzilla takes out a ruthless terrorist organization called Cobra on Cobra Island. It's the best of the entire 26 episode series. Godzilla is allowed to act like Godzilla.

You may have noticed Godzooky, by now. He's the the nephew of Godzilla and Pete's best friend who has a light-hearted/useless role in the show. Godzooky can fly using the small wings under his arms, though his uncle Godzilla is unable to fly. Whenever he tries to breath fire, he just coughs up smoke and he never seems to have the ability to shoot laser beams from his eyes. Or change size, or be awesome. He's a proto-Scrappy Doo.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

Bigfoot and the Muscle Machines!

It was GI Joe, but with Big Foot. The show featured animated versions of vehicles popular in real life competing under the United States Hot Rod Association banner, including Bob Chandler's Bigfoot monster truck, Allen Gaines' Orange Blossom Special two-wheel-drive pulling truck, Kenneth and Paula Geuin's Black Gold four-wheel-drive pulling truck, and Dan Patrick's War Lord pulling funny car.

The story is about five people who run a public monster truck show led by Yank Justice, driver of Bigfoot. The other members of the show include Red & Redder (twin sisters who drive Black Gold), Professor Dee (driver of the Orange Blossom Special), and Close McCall (driver of War Lord). A young woman named Jennifer McGraw steals an ancient map that leads to the Fountain of Youth in Florida by a group of terrorists led by an elderly billionaire named Adrian Ravenscroft (a.k.a. "Mr. Big"), and they are attempting to retrieve the map from her. Ravenscroft hires a couple of workers who helped him try to get the map back named Ernie Slye and Ravenscroft's limousine chauffeur. This band of criminals chases Yank Justice and his friends across the United States and try to kill them.

The first GI JOE Review is in...

by Roger Ebert

"G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" is a 118-minute animated film with sequences involving the faces and other body parts of human beings. It is sure to be enjoyed by those whose movie appreciation is defined by the ability to discern that moving pictures and sound are being employed to depict violence. Nevertheless, it is better than "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Whew. For a moment there I thought it was going to suck!

But then I found this...

If you've ever sat around and reenacted scenes from G.I. Joe with your toys, Paramount's viral movie is for you. The Hasbro toys star in an affectionate parody of the cartoon — right down to the public service announcement.

Paramount released The Invasion of Cobra Island as viral ad for film. It features the high-tech battles fans have always reenacted with their own toys, with added special effects, and lightly mocks some of the cartoon's conventions, such Snake Eyes' awkward silence and Cobra Commander's costume changes.

Yet another GI Joe Trailer

Final G.I. Joe Trailer Features Wayans Slapstick, Mask Bukkake And More Crazy Stunts

I'm a bit partial to the line, "Technically this unit doesn't exist."

I wonder, is that in my mind... or because of all the over the top CGI?

GI Joe Rumors

Are the rumors true that G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra director Stephen Sommers been fired only a couple of months before the film's release?

The rumor surfaced in a post by someone called "EndTimes" on the posting board of producer Don Murphy.

"After a test screening wherein the film tested the lowest score ever from an audience in the history of Paramount, the executive who pushed for the movie Brad Weston had Stephen Sommers, the super hack director of the film fired. Removed. Locked out of the editing room."

According to the rumor, the studio brought in Stuart Baird to edit the film into releasable shape, with Paramount's input. Super notes from suits to save the film!

"It's very unfair to Steve, it's completely untrue. He was never asked to leave or been fired or any of that," di Bonaventura told Latino Review. "That's ridiculous. The movie tested very well." Sure. Then how come this comes from the producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and not from Stephen? And the source is Latino Review???

He added: "It hurts a guy's career when people go around talking about that he was fired or he didn't do a good job, and truth is he did a really good job. People are going to enjoy the movie, and the test audiences enjoyed the movie."

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra: The Epic Fail is slated for release on Aug. 7.

GI Joe News

GI JOE News for the week of April 20th.

Okay, GI JOE Resolute is now on Adult Swim.

Bazooka KIA. Got your attention?

Drawn Manga. Death, no parachutes.

Bazooka gets an autopsy in the second part.

Here's your Link

Onto the Movie front...

I think we all remember the terrible fail that was the leaked toy face of G.I. Joe's live action Cobra Commander. Now, the Cobra actor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is trying to put you Joe fan's minds at ease.

In an interview, Gordon-Levitt said it was the face of Cobra Commander that got him interested in the part in the first place. And reassured us that what we've seen isn't truly the face of the Commander:
That toy is not my face. It's a mask. I like that I get to keep my face. It has less to do with me and more to do with this character that I helped create. That's more thrilling to me. It's this thing that was born out of a creative, collaborative process between me and a bunch of other people that all worked on creating this character.
But, but, you're wearing a scuba mask, dude. And you were born in 1981. I mean, are you really going to try to talk your way out of this? All you had to do was wear a blue hood. I mean, it's not rocket surgery. Sigh.

Well, anyway, check out Resolute and get back here to leave a comment. The guess of this moderator/instigator is that Resolute > Rise of Cobra. Not much of a limb is it?

GI JOE Trailer Spoilers

Hey GI Joe Movie Fans, here's the news from the extended trailer.
Since so many Blasphemes readers seem to care a LOT about this project, here's the skinny ala major spoilerific descriptions...

An extended trailer for this action-y movie showed at Showest. We see a medley of action scenes, including Snake Eyes jumping off a building. A voiceover by General Hawk (Dennis Quaid) talking about how the team technically doesn't exist, and when all else fails, they don't. Duke (Channing Tatum) says, "I want in." Then we see Duke and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) chasing a Humvee through the streets of Paris, wearing their Accelerator suits. Then we see an Arab in the desert, who spies three shapes moving through the desert sands towards the Pit, the team's hidden base. Drillbits drill through the cliffs surrounding the base, and one of them opens to reveal the Baroness (Siena Miller) sitting on board the M.A.R.S. Mole Pod.

Then Destro (Christopher Eccleston) explains to Cobra Commander (Joseph Gordon Levitt) that M.A.R.S. Industries has developed killer nano-machines. A member of Cobra shoots a rocket launcher over a rooftop, where Duke and the Baronness see it fly overhead. The rocket hits the Eiffel Tower and unleashes the nano-machines, which eat away at the tower until it collapses into the Seine. Ripcord looks startled.

There are glimpses of Shadow Storm's fights with Snake Eyes, and Jonathan Pryce being the President. The same deadly nanobots hit the Joes' Firebat jet. And Duke and the Baroness fight on that rooftop as she yells that this only gets worse. She fires a rocket at him. And then that Humvee crashes into a train, followed by Duke and Ripcord, who crash through the train's windows. [Superhero Hype]

Cobra Commander

We've shown you the face of Cobra Commander from the kids' toy line of the new live action G.I. Joe movie. But the previous plastic cherub face could not prepare us for the real thing.

The folks over at Topless Robot pointed us in the direction of this monstrosity. This, gang, is the face of the live action Cobra Commander:
Keee-rist. How hard is it to put a hood on a character? I'm almost waiting for them to chant Cobra lalalalaallaallaaah at the end of this disaster.

Destro

Here is your first look at what Destro will most likely look like in Steven Sommers’ film ‘G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra’. I know its in toy form.

GI Toe is [probably] Going to Stink

Folks, the GI Joe movie has been showing signs of total and complete suck for months now. Pretty much ever since they decided that it's going to be an international task force....

A video from the Toy Fair shows a robotic GI Joe suit that does 'awesome' stuff. It's got cords and running, it talks, and looks more like RoboCop and Buzz Lightyear's illegitimate son. That outfit reveals "the Accelerator sequence" in the movie. It's an Iron Man-ish power suit. It is not the simple GI Joe with a Kung Fu grip. Oh, and suggested retail is $70.

Meanwhile, all research on the subject - because for some reason Blasphemes readers really enjoy GI Joe movie updates - everyone involved, from the Director, to the writer, to the art director have zero knowledge of the property before they were hired. Look, that's probably okay. Most Star Wars kids grew out of their toys before GI Joe really got big. But no one involved seems to know what this is about. GI Joe has been around since the 60's. There was a comic, a fairly rich toy history, and a half hour ad/cartoon that ran most of the 80's. Zero knowledge?

Plus - they're under an extreme time crunch to get the principle photography (read green screen) finished so that they can cram in the 1,400 FX in before August. All this because some people went to see the transforming trucks... So don't expect Oscar caliber dialogue on this steamer.

Second, they're screwing around with Cobra Commander. Here's the first look. Granted, it's for the kiddies - but it's a fairly good guess what the final will end up looking like.

Guys, this isn't hard - he's supposed to look like this or this:

I'm not even suggesting that you make him a used car salesman (Marvel Comics) or a complete idiot that spent no time in training his people. Cobra troops couldn't shoot straight. Hell, even his pilots in mini-helicopters had to have standard issue parachutes because they got shot down so often.

At least NO ONE ever got hurt.

Let's face it - Cobra Commander was a meglo-maniac with an inexhaustible trust fund for MASS Devices, a weather dominators, and flying aircraft carrier bases (even at 1985's prices, I can't imagine what it would have cost just to fuel that thing) and a retirement pension fund for henchmen that must rival the UAW especially since no one ever died - but say what you will about the guy - his style was pretty awesome. So why mess with that?

I should also mention that Snake Eyes has a mouth in his face mask - and it kind of moves when he's not speaking.

On the bright side, there's no mention of Sgt. Slaughter being on the cast.

Trailers via Super Bowl

Let me get this straight - the three geekiest things, dare I say, even Nerdy things going on this year - the GI Joe movie, Transformers 2 and the Trek Reboot are being advertised on the SuperBowl? Remember, that's 3 million dollars for 30 seconds.

Either their marketing teams think that 3 million is best spent on a wide audience, instead of viral marketing on blogs and/or action figure sites? Perhaps it's a good investment. There's a 20% chance that their target audience is tuning into the Cardinals/Steelers game? I don't know, maybe their fathers are making them tune in yet another failed attempt to have them "man up."

Perhaps the marketers of these three films already believe that they've nailed the Lord of the Rings crowd, and now needs to focus on the NFL audience?

A puzzle for sure. But in case you'd like to see them... or in the odd chance you actually go take a piss during the ads, here's Trek and GI Joe and Transformers 2 trailers:

Treck - er, I mean - Trek

and GI Joe--

and Transformers. Note the 'dinosaur,' fanboys.

First Act: Freeze Cuba

President Obama ordered the nation to freeze Cuba.

No doubt he'll just fire up ole' Dick Cheney's Weather Dominator - last used to destroy the levies in New Orleans, to kill African Americans. The Weather Dominator uses three unique parts that -

What's that? President Obama has ordered the U.S. government to suspend prosecutions of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay for 120 days?

Obama had vowed to close the naval prison at the U.S. base. While Obama's order does not go that far, it will stop the prosecutions of 21 detainees currently facing war crimes charges.

Oh?

And it's time to put away childish things. Yeah, good luck with that one.

Ask How YOU Can Win a Free Trip to Gitmo!

Gitmo 'Justice' for US Citizens?

Most of this was Cutn'Pasted from a story by Robert Parry. July 21, 2008

The conservative-dominated U.S. Appeals Court has opened the door for President George W. Bush or a successor to throw American citizens – as well as non-citizens – into a legal black hole by designating them “enemy combatants,” even if they have engaged in no violent act and are living on U.S. soil.

The federal Appeals Court in Richmond, Virginia, ruled 5-4 on July 15 that Bush had the right, while prosecuting the “war on terror,” to hold Qatari citizen (and Peoria, Illinois, resident) Ali al-Marri indefinitely as an “enemy combatant.”

But some of the court’s more liberal judges expressed alarm, saying the legal reasoning that denied al-Marri meaningful due process not only trampled on American legal traditions but could be used to lock up U.S. citizens as well.

“For over two centuries of growth and struggle, peace and war, the Constitution has secured our freedom through the guarantee that, in the United States, no one will be deprived of liberty without due process of law,” wrote Judge Diana Motz, a Bill Clinton appointee, who dissented against the court’s approval of sweeping presidential powers.

Motz noted that al-Marri has been imprisoned for more than five years, “without acknowledgement of the protection afforded by the Constitution, solely because the Executive believes that his indefinite military detention – or even the indefinite military detention of a similarly situated American citizen – is proper.”

Al-Marri’s lawyers plan to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the case underscores one of the biggest issues at stake in the November elections: whether Republican John McCain will get to fulfill his promise to appoint more Supreme Court judges like Samuel Alito and John Roberts, who have embraced Bush’s vision of an all-powerful President.

Here's the rest of the entire story, which I suggest you please read. It is from the Consortium News - which claims Independent Investigative Journalism. So, I'm a bit troubled by this... a bit more than 'troubled' actually.

As you know, I've been a champion of Gitmo - mostly because the alternative throughout human history has been to just kill your enemies. Gitmo is an evolution of war - where instead of battlefield deaths, and left for the flies, the United States has taken the people who have shot at them to a beautiful communist tropical island paradise. Yes, to torture them like Kiefer Sutherland on a bender, but they're ALIVE... I guess we can't agree that this is a step forward? Okay. And seeing as how the due process that was granted to the folks being held in Gitmo have been granted by the SCOTUS - there's a real doubt that this situation will move forward.

But there's real doubt there.

Also, what the hell was this guy doing in Peoria IL?

Al-Marri entered the United States on a legal student visa, along with his wife and children, only a day before the 9/11 attacks. He was arrested amid the panic and fear that followed the attacks, and was charged criminally in a credit-card scheme.

But the Bush administration then asserted that al-Marri was an al-Qaeda “sleeper cell” agent planning follow-up attacks, declared him an “enemy combatant,” and locked him up at a Navy brig in South Carolina, where he was held incommunicado.

Eventually, al-Marri challenged his indefinite detention through a federal court suit. Bush’s lawyers countered by citing the Military Commissions Act in seeking to deny him access to civilian courts.

In an affidavit submitted to a District Court, a U.S. counter-terrorism official alleged that al-Marri had received al-Qaeda training, was prepared to engage in a suicide attack, and had met personally with Osama bin Laden and other senior terrorist leaders.

He was going to suicide bomb Peoria? Who the hell would have noticed that?
Either that, or that was the best attempt to hide I've ever heard of. In light of this new information perhaps, maybe just perhaps we shouldn't underestimate these terrorist sh*theads?
