Indiana Mustache

Before George Lucas settled on Harrison Ford to play Indiana Jones, he tried out a few other actors for the role, including Magnum PI Tom Selleck and Sean Young.

Cut'n'pasted from superpunch. I don't know where they stole this from.

Egypt Fears

What, no 'Idi'? And why are all these guys white?

On a serious note - here's the REAL STORY of what's going on, on the ground. Minus the spin.
The tl;dr is this:
  • Saturday was indescribable. Nothing that I write can describe the utter state of lawlessness that prevailed.

  • Today the Egyptians are scared. They have been given a glimpse of hell and they don't like what they see. Contrary to Al Jazeera's propaganda, the Egyptian masses are not demonstrating anymore. They are protecting their homes and families. The demonstration last night had 5,000 political activists participating and not 150,000 as Al Jazeera insists. At this moment, no one outside of those political activists cares less now if the President will resign or not. They have more important concerns now; security and food.

  • So where are we today? Well the answer is still not clear, yet a couple of conclusions are evident.

    1. The Gamal inheritance scenario is finished.

    2. Mubarak will not run for another Presidential term. His term ends in October and either he will serve the rest of his term or will resign once things cool down for health reasons, which are real. He is dying.

    3. The army is in control now. We are heading back to the "golden age" of army rule. The "kids" are no longer in charge. The "men' are.

    4. Until the economy fails again, the neo-liberal economic policies are over. Forget about an open economy for some time.

  • Immediately the task of the army is to stabilize the situation and enforce order.

  • Security wise the situation is a disaster. It might take months to arrest all those criminals again.

  • Outside of Western media hype, El Baradei is nothing. A man that has spent less than 30 days in the past year in Egypt and hardly any time in the past 20 years is a nobody. It is entirely insulting to Egyptians to suggest otherwise.

  • On the long run the Egyptian question remains the same. Nothing has changed in that regard.

Angry Sun Less Predictible

Anyone want to bother remembering when I went out on a limb and told everyone not to worry about man made global warming - since, you know, most of our planet's warming is a direct result of the nuclear fireball that we're in orbit around? Yeah, I don't even feel like looking it up either. Well, I'm fairly sure I said, don't worry about carbon - worry about the sun. Even though, there's not much to anything you can do about the sun. You can't predict it accurately either. Much like climate change. Just ask NASA....

It seems that solar scientists did not, and still do not know what the hell is going on with the sun. The GIF animation below from WUWT illustrates the changes in predictions over the last 3 years....
This will be at the level of the Maunder Minimum of 1675 -1715.
Previous NASA predictions below:
2010 October: Predicted peak 60-70
2009 May 29: predicted peak: 80-90 range
2009 Jan 5: predicted peak: 100-110 range
2008 Mar 28: predicted peak: 130-140 range

From the NASA page:

Current prediction for the next sunspot cycle maximum gives a smoothed sunspot number maximum of about 59 in June/July of 2013. We are currently two years into Cycle 24 and the predicted size continues to fall. _WUWT
They still are just totally guessing at this point. Why does any of this matter? Because, even if man IS heating up the planet with some puny CO2 molecules - it doesn't hold a tiny match to the almighty sun. And right about now, the angry sun god isn't producing. Which means farmer Jack isn't going to either. And given the price of oil (*pst*- it's going up because we haven't got much left) is going to make things very comical on this rock pretty damn soon! Well, for humans anyway. Whales and dolphins on the equator are going to get a good laugh at how this plays out for the hairless apes.

End of the Year

Snooki and a Red Solo Cup inside a giant hamster ball getting ready to drop during yesterday’s taping of her New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, which was forced to move from Times Square to Seaside Heights due to “technical difficulties.”

My guess is that it only slowly lowered the creature into the boiling lava - instead of the intended freefall with a splashing lava flow on the rest of the Jersey Shore cast members. I hope they get that fixed up for tonight.

2001: A Different Score

Alex North's original score restored to 2001 A Space Odyssey. Included are a few minutes of the first scene "The Dawn of man." What's interesting, and Blasphemous about this - is that North was hired to score the film -- then fired, or Kubrick changed his mind. In an alternate universe, this is the opening. They fly to Jupiter on the Millennium Falcon, and name the computer R2... wait, no, that's the alternate universe after Marty accidentally bumped into Kubrick with the DeLorean on the way to warn him that Biff stole the Oscar Winning script for Napoleon.... Napoleon Dynamite.
