Early Winners and Losers in Free Agency

While there are still many big names available in free agency, it’s easy to see which teams have a head start to the 2009 season in upgrading their rosters. A quick take on the transactions of the last 48 hours:

Winners

Washington Redskins
Daniel Snyder loves to piss away his money. Maybe he’s finally figured it out? Instead of overpaying hype players like Randle El or Brandon Lloyd who’ll just end up getting cut a year later, the Skins have actually found a cornerstone to the team: Albert Haynesworth.

New England
Whether it’s trading for Randy Moss for a bag of footballs, or tagging a backup quarterback then dishing him for picks, the Patriots rarely make bad decisions. Signing Fred Taylor could be the biggest steal of the week. Taylor could have a big fantasy year in ‘09; his running style fits the Patriots perfectly. There’s almost a hint of déjà vu with Taylor going to New England, as this reminds me of the Patriots signing Corey Dillon and reigniting his career.

Losers

Philadelphia
The Eagles improved their O line with Stacy Andrews, but had a few of their key players poached while they weren’t paying attention. They lost Safety Brian Dawkins, Correll Buckhalter and Sean Considine, and trading away Lito Sheppard for next to nothing seems like a waste. The Eagles still have McNabb looking over their shoulders and begging for more toys.

Cleveland

Why would they trade away Kellen Winslow Jr. for draft picks? The Browns could have made a few moves to improve their team. Instead there are rumors of Brady Quinn not being the guy next season, and even if he is, they just sent a reliable weapon packing.

On the Fence:

New York Jets- Great you got LB Bart Scott & Lito Sheppard but who’s your QB now? Don't tell me you didn't see that one coming?

Denver Broncos-Quantity over quality, but they’re having a pretty good weekend.

Arizona Cardinals- Are slowly getting picked apart… and they better re-sign Warner soon, since he’s [for some reason] in demand.

NFL Network

Senator John F. Kerry reporting for duty. This time he is for it, before he's against it - and of all the topics he could choose as an ex-Presidential candidate... he's made his choice.

Senator John F. Kerry (D - Mass) is not letting this travesty continue. He's sent a letter to National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell and President and CEO of National Cable & Telecommunications Association Kyle McSlarrow begging them to put aside their differences and get the NFL Network on every TV in the land. This is of utmost importance for Kerry and his constituents here in the great state of Massachusetts, since the New England Patriots final game of the regular season is scheduled for the NFL Network, meaning many might not be able to see it. (Not sure if Kerry knows that game can be seen on a local broadcast channel as well, but why let details get in the way.)

If Kerry showed this kind of resolve in 2004, he could have sent his letter in an envelope with a return address of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

I guess he really really wanted to see the Bears get plastered last night? Rex is out. The Bears are out. A mere shell of a team that went to the Super Bowl and was predicted to do it again. (not win it... heavens no, that's been the Pat's to lose since the Colts knocked them out last year) Sigh. How long until pitchers and catchers report? Wow - that's a long time. Basketball and Hockey it is then.

Let's Play Nice

I would like to begin by apologizing to the readers of the blog about our mini-blowup yesterday. It's not my style to apologize normally; nor is it my style to try to mitigate the damage folks create when they rant. In fact, I love it. At some point yesterday, I got a very angry email (which I did not fully comprehend) from Howard claiming that we are some kind of "demonic censors who are afraid to hear the truth." I agree that once something is written here it kinda stays. You live with your mistakes. That's the fun and danger of posting to a blog. I assume that the header is what set Howard off and the new one should be much easier on his constitution (assuming he believes in Constitutions) to make a nicer header that would fill him with happy thoughts as he posts.

Another not nice item today is the New England Patriots. Unfortunately, they are in the NFL. I say this because commissioner Roger Goodell is not Bud Selig. The Patriots were caught videotaping signal calls from the sidelines. This is illegal. If you would like to steal signs in the NFL you need to do it the old fashion way, watching the other team's sidelines instead of your own for the whole game.

They are cold busted by one of their own former coaches who now is working for the NY Jets. Now it will be up to Goodell to deem an appropriate punishment. One might say that it is up to the dog to decide Michael Vick's fate. Goodell is not gentle.

It is suspected that he will take away some draft picks. I say, not good enough. This is the punishment I expect. They forfeit the game they were caught cheating with. No first day draft picks for 2008. No first round draft picks for 2009. I think that this would prevent any future cheating. Don't you?

Update: This is one funny ass board. The Patriot fans are saying that all is cool with this (as in "everybody does it"). My favorite was the poster that claims that the NFL just wants "parody in the league." Everyone else is working them into a lather. Good times.
